Released on February 1, 2005, by Columbia Records, Apart served as the introductory maxi-single for the Horseheads, New York-based synth-pop quartet Elkland. Led by vocalist Jon Pierce—who later gained international acclaim as the frontman of The Drums—the band specialized in a sleek, upbeat revival of 1980s New Wave and post-punk aesthetics. The title track, produced by Dave Trumfio, became a sleeper hit on alternative and dance radio, characterized by its shimmering synthesizers and Pierce's yearning, melodic vocals.
