The Embarcadero Freeway, built in the 1950s, was a controversial elevated highway that cut through San Francisco’s waterfront, blocking views of the bay and disconnecting the city from its historic piers. After being severely damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the freeway was demolished in the early 1990s, paving the way for the revitalization of the Embarcadero.
