In order to be an accessible and inclusive practitioner, we have to ask ourselves - who do I want to access my services, and what are the specific barriers that they face? Barriers include physical, financial, technological and cultural, and differ based on each person’s lived experience. It can be easy for us to be inaccessible without realizing it to people who have different needs. How can we set up our practice and consultations in a way that is accessible, welcoming and respectful for each person’s unique needs? How can we adapt or respond to barriers as they arise? How can we improve the accessibility of our clinic and educational spaces while centering sustainability over the long term, as professionals who have to balance our values with making a living? This class will provide practical and concrete skills and models you can put into practice now to better welcome and support a diversity of clients. The framework of this class will be taught through a client-centered, anti-racist lens, grounded in the belief that accessible community based herbalism can help us build collective resilience during the challenges of our times. Ember Peters (they/them) is a clinical herbalist and educator based in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia, unceded Mi’kmaq territory. They have over 3000 hours of clinical experience since 2014, focusing on providing inclusive sliding-scale herbal care to people with chronic illness. Their practice integrates scientific knowledge with energetic systems, scientific research, phytochemistry, physiology, flower essences and holistic nutrition. Ember is a Registered Herbal Practitioner and board member with the Herbalist Association of Nova Scotia (HANS). They are a founder of the Maritime School of Holistic Herbalism, Wild Current Herbalism, and have taught widely at conferences and schools including the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, the American Herbalists Guild Symposium, the Canadian Herb Conference and the Elderberry Academy. Trans inclusive care and anti-racism/dismantling white supremacy are cornerstones of Ember’s practice, a part of their life-long commitment to fighting for liberation for all peoples.
