The Emerald Crab (Mithraculus sculptus) is well respected for its scavenging ability. It will enthusiastically feed on uneaten meaty foods and many types of nuisance algae, particu larly Bubble algae (Valonia spp). They are compatible with each other and with most other fish and invertebrates, including corals, sponges, and anemones. Emerald Crabs are a very interesting addition to a saltwater tank, that frequently become part of a group of scavengers in a reef aquarium, “algae clean-up crew”. They have a lumpy, green carapace, furry legs, and claws flattened at the tips, specifically designed to keep your saltwater aquarium clean, the natural way. Most commonly they are found in a light or dark green coloration. Green Emerald crabs are found in the shallow waters of the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, from as far north as Miami, throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean, and south to northern Brazil. They are common in reefs, living in rock cavities, corals or sponges from intertidal to a maximum 55m depth.
