In midsummer the hike to Lower Calf Creek ends at this sweeping sandstone amphitheater, and the first thing that strikes you is the green — vivid moss streaking the cliff face, bri ght cottonwoods crowding the alcove's edge, and the emerald tint the water takes on as it slides over the lip and falls. The waterfall itself drops in a soft curtain, feeding a still pool that spreads across the sandy floor like a stage. The layered rock curves around the scene in one grand arc, striped in ochre and salmon, and the trees press in from the wings as if they've gathered to watch. It feels less like a waterfall and more like a performance — the canyon as theater, the water as its single, endless act. Show more
