The EMG EXG is an active guitar expander control for use with EMG active pickup systems, sitting on the outboard-module shelf alongside the SPC presence control, the AB Afterburner clean boost, the PA2 passive-preamp module and the VMC variable mid-cut. Where the SPC lifts a broad upper-mid peak to cut through a busy mix, the EXG works at the opposite frequency extremes: a single rotary control tilts the response outwards, boosting treble and bass together for a broader, more open sound, or tilts inwards to scoop the extremes and centre the tone on the midrange. The circuit is a shelving expander rather than a simple treble-and-bass pair of shelves, so the two extremes move together across the sweep of the pot rather than being adjustable separately. Fully counterclockwise gives a focused, midrange-forward voice with the ends of the spectrum pulled back, useful for cutting through a dense wall of guitars in a heavier band or dialling back the top-and-bottom for rhythm passages that need to sit under a vocal. Fully clockwise opens the sound outwards, adding air and low-end weight for a bigger single-instrument voice, or for lead passages where the guitar carries the frame of the arrangement on its own. The centre position sits flat, so the EXG can be left in circuit without imposing a colour and reached for only when the arrangement asks for it. Installs in place of a standard tone pot in an EMG solderless active harness, powered from the shared 9V pickup battery with minimal current draw.
