The EMG J Set is a matched pair of active Jazz Bass-format pickups built around ceramic magnets and steel pole pieces, designed as a direct replacement for the passive Jazz Bass si ngle coils that have shaped the sound of the instrument since 1960. The active circuitry was EMG's answer to a long-running issue with passive J pickups, namely the hum that creeps in whenever one is favoured over the other in the volume blend, and the set cancels hum at both positions independently so blends stay noise-free across the entire range of the controls. Voicing follows the classic Jazz Bass template, clear and articulate with a defined upper midrange and a tight low end, but with the headroom and even string-to-string response that the active preamp delivers. Slap and fingerstyle work both come through with the same clarity, and the lower noise floor makes the set a sensible choice for studio tracking as well as loud stages. Output is high but not compressed, leaving room for pedals and front-of-amp gain stages to shape the tone further. Fits standard Jazz Bass routes in all four finishes (Black, Ivory, Red, White), runs from a single 9V battery and includes EMG's solderless install kit for a tool-light fitting.
