EMLA® Cream 5% is a topical local anaesthetic cream used to temporarily numb the surface of the skin before certain medical procedures. It contains two local anaesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine, which work together to reduce pain from procedures such as injections, vaccinations and blood tests. Directions: For minor procedures on intact skin, apply a thick layer of cream without rubbing it in and cover with an appropriate occlusive dressing. For many routine needle procedures, the cream is normally left in place for approximately 1 hour before the procedure. The amount required and maximum application time vary according to age, procedure and area of skin being treated, so always follow the patient information leaflet carefully.
