Despite its trade names, this species is neither a true goby nor a blenny; it belongs to the distinct family Pholidichthyidae. It inhabits shallow lagoons and coastal reefs, where juveniles may form tightly packed schools beneath ledges and around coral heads. A sand depth of approximately 3–4 inches allows the Engineer Goby to excavate the tunnels and chambers that are central to its natural behavior. All major rock structures must rest securely on the aquarium bottom or on a stable support system rather than sitting loosely on top of the sand. This species can remove large amounts of substrate from beneath rockwork, potentially causing an unstable aquascape to shift or collapse. Leave open sand around the base of the rocks so displaced substrate does not continuously bury corals or block equipment. Moderate, well-distributed water movement, strong filtration, and good oxygenation are appropriate. Because active excavation can release trapped debris into the water column, mechanical filtration should be maintained regularly. Provide enough floor space for a full-grown fish to develop a permanent burrow system without undermining the entire display. Diet and Feeding The Engineer Goby is a carnivore that naturally feeds on small crustaceans and other animal prey.
