Salvia engelmannii Engelmann's Sage is a lovely, compact mound about 1 to 1 1/2 feet tall, adorned with velvety, narrow leaves and striking flower spikes. Its flowers bloom in delightful shades of pale lavender to pale blue, arranged on 4-6 inch spikes. Though similar to Texas sage, Engelmann's sage boasts charming pale-blue flowers, a shorter bloom period, and grows larger. When you notice new growth at the base of the plant, it's a great time to cut back the old stems gently. This resilient plant thrives with good drainage and can adapt well to dry, rocky soils, including types like sandy, sandy loam, medium loam, clay loam, clay, caliche, and limestone-based soils. The plant species is named after George Engelmann, who was born in Germany in 1809 and made his home in St. Louis, Missouri, during his early years. As both a physician and a passionate botanist, he devoted himself to studying North American flora.
