The English Electric Lightning is a British fighter aircraft that served as an interceptor during the 1960s, 1970s and into the late 1980s. It was designed, developed, and manufactured by English Electric, and later marketed as the BAC Lightning after English Electric merged with other aircraft manufacturers to form the British Aircraft Corporation. A total of 337 English Electric Lightning aircraft were built, including prototypes and all variants, according to BAE Systems. The aircraft served with the RAF from 1959 to 1988 and also saw service with the air forces of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
