What is Herpesvirus Type 1? EHV-1 is ubiquitous, causing respiratory disease, abortion, neonatal death, and myeloencephalopathy. Common in young horses, establishing latent infection with viral reactivation during stress. Clinical signs Respiratory: Mild disease (pyrexia), affecting young horses. Abortion: Occurring during the 3rd trimester. Neurological (EHM): Outbreaks causing severe movement restrictions and management difficulties. Transmission Direct horse-to-horse contact or indirect contact via contaminated objects. Shedding via respiratory secretions or aborted fetal material. The virus can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces. Prevention Isolate horses into small, closed groups. Minimize stress and maximize herd immunity via vaccination. In case of outbreak: disinfect, isolate affected horses, and implement strict biosecurity.
