Eric Clapton CBE is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter, widely considered one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. A member of the 1960s blues influenced rock and roll band The Yardbirds, he later formed the power trio ‘Cream’ and joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the clearing house for guitarists. The lyrics of Clapton’s song ‘Layla’ in this painting unites the man and stage persona. Clapton became infatuated with his close friend George Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd. When she, at first, spurned his advances he co-wrote ‘Layla’, inspired by his reading of the classic Persian unrequited love story, the epic poem Layla and Manjun. The digital painting is based on a photo by rock photographer Solomon N’Jie of Clapton playing a Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar at Wembley Arena 5 March 1985.
