Essence 16 (2025) is a small-scale, one-of-a-kind sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen — an intimate and thoughtful gift shaped by two coastal origins. Handcrafted from pōhutukawa roots salvaged from fallen trees at Cheltenham and St Heliers, this piece brings together two Auckland locations into a quietly balanced form. The intertwined root structure creates natural movement and tension, giving the sculpture a sense of depth and resilience despite its compact scale. Finished with natural oil and wax, the surface reveals the rich grain and warm tones of pōhutukawa while preserving the timber’s organic character. Essence 16 offers a lasting alternative to the fleeting — an original artwork made from reclaimed New Zealand native wood that symbolises connection, grounding, and endurance. Entirely unique, this handcrafted sculpture is a personal and meaningful gift for someone special.
