How to Choose Axe Handle Length Generally speaking, the longer the axe handle, the more force you could deliver. However, it may not be under control as easy as the short-handled axe, i.e. you may not be able to get the axe where you need it, particularly for beginners. A shorter one allows you to swing with more control and accuracy. If you are going to be in the bush or in the woods, carrying a bunch of stuff around, cutting relatively small pieces of wood for fire or shelter, 16'' pocket-size Estwing Camper's Axe will be a perfect fit.
