Escape artist "The Great Arturo" (David Niven) wins the heart of beautiful bride-to-be Anita (Loretta Young) while performing at her bridal shower. She becomes his "vanishing" stag e assistant, but when he breaks all of his romantic promises and his stunts become worrisomely dangerous, she disappears for good and marries her old love, Benton (Hugh Herbert).
