Sturgeons predate many living fish species, appearing in the fossil record approximately 200 million years ago; their slow evolution has earned them the informal status as living fossils. Found throughout North America, ranging from subtropical to subarctic waters, sturgeons are bottom-feeders, eating small fish and invertebrates found by sifting through silt or sand on the bottom of rivers and oceans. Sturgeons are late to mature, and can live to be over 100 years old.
