The color of Exem is a deep blue red. The aromas are of ripe red and black fruits with no green notes found in ‘old fashion’ Bordeaux reds. The palate is rich and harmonious. Good thing we have a French dictionary handy! “Exem” is an abbreviation for “exemplaire,” which translates to “excellent” and means deserving of imitation. What a perfect name for a wine of such high quality. Exem Bordeaux is estate produced by the Gonfrier family in Lestiac-sur-Garonne, a little village southeast of Bordeaux along the right bank of the Garonne River. It’s in the Premières Cotes de Bordeaux appellation, a narrow band along the southwest border of the Entre-Deux-Mers on south-facing slopes along the river. The Grofriers have embraced a “new” style of winemaking for Bordeaux — one that emphasizes fruit flavors over “terroir.” It’s an almost revolutionary concept for the appellation, but one that results in delicious wines like this exceptional Merlot-based blend.
