Description Extruded polystyrene foam is a low cost rigid foam with a very low density of 0.033g/cm³. It can be used for general modelmaking and craft applications as well as a structural core in lightweight constructions and as a dissolvable former or core. Extruded polystyrene foam is one of the only foams suitable for hot-wire cutting, and can be quickly and accurately cut using this method as well as by hand or CNC. It can be dissolved by solvents such as acetone and styrene which allows polystyrene foam to be used either as a sacrificial core or laminated over (for example using an epoxy resin) then dissolved and removed to create a hollow structure. It can also be used in thermal insulation and buoyancy applications. Extruded polystyrene foam is more difficult to shape by hand than polyurethane foam which cuts and shapes extremely well, making it less suitable for pattern making than PU foams If you have a requirement for machined or finished polystyrene foam components please ask the Plastock team for more information.
