Facheiroa squamosa seeds grow into the scaly tree cactus — a columnar cactus native to the seasonally dry tropical biome of north-eastern Brazil (Pernambuco, north-eastern Bahia), growing on limestone cliffs at 370–1,000 m. The epithet squamosa means 'scaly' (from Latin squama = scale), referring to the scaly areoles. Two subspecies recognised: subsp. squamosa (Pernambuco, NE Bahia) and subsp. polygona. Formerly classified in the monotypic genus Zehntnerella. Produces tall columnar stems; light brown spines; white tubular flowers 35–40 mm; grows with Melocactus, Pilosocereus and Tacinga.
