It grows best in sun or light shade and in moist but well-drained soil, including chalk. If left untrimmed it becomes a large deciduous tree, typically exceeding 12m in height and 8m or more in spread at maturity, though as a hedge it is usually maintained around 1–3m high. Growth rate is moderate and the small spring flowers are followed by beechmast in autumn.
