Inconspicuous spring flowers are produced in April–May. A long-lived deciduous tree, it can ultimately reach about 30m in height and approximately 20m in spread when grown freely, yet it is easily maintained as a hedge around 1–3m high. Best in full sun or light shade and in moist, well-drained, fertile soil; avoid very wet or shallow chalky ground. Feeding time: Early spring Trimming time: Late summer (August) To help give a clear sense of scale, the stone wall shown in our photos measures approximately 265cm in height. We also use familiar garden tools as visual references: a digging fork (110cm tall) and a hand fork (30cm tall). These are included purely as size guides to help you better judge proportions when viewing the images.
