This Ferris wheel, with its bright yellow booths, has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Pripyat and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. It was part of the city’s amusement park, located behind the Palace of Culture and Hotel Polissya, close to Lenin Square. The park was meant to open on May 1, 1986, as part of the Unternational Workers Day celebrations. It included bumper cars, a carousel, swings, and this Ferris wheel. But the disaster at the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant interrupted those plans. The park never officially opened. It did, however, operate briefly in test mode. Some residents have shared photographs showing the wheel turning as early as February 1986. There are also reports that the attractions were switched on for a short time on April 27, the day after the explosion, to distract residents before the evacuation order was announced.
