Famosa 32OZ
Famosa 32OZ is a 5% ABV Guatemalan pale lager in a shareable 32-ounce bottle, brewed by one of Central America's most historic breweries. This crisp, hop-forward lager earned a 202 4 Monde Selection Gold Medal and has accumulated 25 Monde Selection awards — including 21 golds — since 1967, making it one of Latin America's most internationally recognized beers. Quick Facts: ABV: 5% | Origin: Guatemala City, Guatemala | Style: Pale Lager | Brewery: Cervecería Centro Americana, S.A. Production & Heritage Cervecería Centro Americana has brewed this beer continuously since 1896, making it Guatemala's oldest still-produced beer. Known domestically as Gallo, the lager was rebranded as Famosa for export to the United States and France. The brewery sources its malts from Denmark, Sweden, and Germany, while the hops come exclusively from Washington's Yakima Valley — a combination that yields 20 IBUs of bitterness from an 11.5° Plato original gravity wort. The result is a full-bodied yet highly drinkable pale lager with more hop character than most Central American lagers. Tasting Notes Aroma: Floral hop notes lead, followed by hints of star jasmine, eucalyptus, and a subtle citrus brightness. A light crackery malt base anchors the nose without competing with the delicate hop aromatics. Taste: The entry is clean and bright with medium-high carbonation lifting the palate immediately. At mid-palate, a firm hop bitterness emerges alongside light straw-like pilsner malt and a faint resinous quality. The body is light but carries enough substance to avoid feeling thin or watery. Finish: A lingering hoppy aftertaste stays present longer than expected for the style, balanced by a dry, slightly bitter close. The carbonation keeps the finish crisp and refreshing rather than heavy. How to Drink Famosa Serve ice-cold in its bottle or poured into a pilsner glass to let the floral hop aromatics open up. The 32-ounce format is built for sharing or extended sessions. Michelada: Famosa's firm hop backbone and clean body stand up to the lime, hot sauce, and Worcestershire without getting lost in the mix. Beer Margarita (Beergarita): The lager's citrus-leaning hop profile complements frozen margarita mix, adding effervescence and balance. Shandy: Paired with fresh lemonade, the floral jasmine and eucalyptus notes in Famosa add complexity to a simple summer drink. Best For Backyard cookouts and grilling sessions where a shareable 32oz format keeps things social Pairing with Central American and Mexican cuisine at dinner Introducing friends to authentic Guatemalan beer culture Warm-weather drinking when a hop-forward lager beats a bland adjunct alternative Frequently Asked Questions What does Famosa taste like? Famosa is a clean, bright pale lager with noticeable hop bitterness, floral and citrus aromatics, and a light crackery malt backbone that finishes dry and crisp. How does Famosa compare to Budweiser? Both are pale lagers at similar ABVs, but Famosa leans noticeably hoppier at 20 IBUs with European malts and Yakima Valley hops, while Budweiser emphasizes a smoother, sweeter rice-adjunct profile with less pronounced bitterness. Is Famosa good for sipping on its own? Famosa drinks well straight from the bottle when served ice-cold, and its slightly elevated hop character gives it more flavor interest than many mainstream lagers in the same ABV range. Where is Famosa made? Famosa is brewed by Cervecería Centro Americana, S.A. in Guatemala City, Guatemala — a brewery founded in 1896 that produces the country's oldest continually brewed beer. What foods pair well with Famosa? Grilled chicken or carne asada benefits from the beer's hop bitterness cutting through charred fat. Ceviche and aguachile pair naturally with its citrus-toned aromatics. Black bean dishes and pupusas complement the malt backbone, while spicy salsas and chiles are tempered by the beer's carbonation and dry finish. What sizes does Famosa come in? Famosa is available in multiple formats including this 32-ounce bottle, as well as standard 12-ounce bottles and cans commonly sold in six-packs. Is Famosa worth the price? Famosa positions as an accessible, everyday import lager that delivers more hop complexity than most beers at its price tier, and its 128-year brewing heritage and Monde Selection Gold credentials add legitimate pedigree to a very approachable beer. Why Famosa? With 25 Monde Selection awards stretching back over five decades — including the rare Crystal Prestige Award and a Great Gold medal in 1992 — Famosa carries more international competition hardware than virtually any other Central American lager. Its recipe, built on imported Scandinavian and German malts combined with Pacific Northwest hops, produces a distinctly hoppier profile than the adjunct-heavy lagers that dominate the market. The 32-ounce bottle format suits the communal drinking culture the brand was born from, and at 5% ABV, the beer stays sessionable without sacrificing flavor. For drinkers seeking a Latin American lager with real character and a verifiable track record, Famosa stands on more than a century of evidence.
