Mottled greens, creams, and terra cottas swirl through this egg—every surface a different composition.Fancy jasper is a multicolored variety of jasper—itself an opaque, fine-grained aggregate of microcrystalline quartz with various mineral impurities that produce its banded and mottled patterning. The color variation in fancy jasper reflects the mix of iron oxides, chlorite, epidote, and clay minerals within the silica matrix: green from chlorite, red-brown from hematite, cream from kaolin. Mohs 6.5–7 and takes an excellent polish. The egg form is a carved shape with a flat stability point on one end, intended to stand on its own.Jasper has been used as a talisman and adornment stone across the ancient Mediterranean world.
