Colorful impressionist mid-century oil painting of a farm in a field. Oil on canvas, c. 1940s, signed. This canvas shows a low barn anchoring an otherwise open plain, its roofline the only firm structure against a sky doing most of the work: layered greys, blues and warm whites pushed across the canvas in broad, decisive strokes. The foreground olive and ochre grasses are laid in loosely, almost shorthand, in contrast to the more considered handling of the middle distance — a compositional habit typical of Cardell's mature landscapes, where atmosphere is built from the top down. The painting is cleaned and comes with a complementary, well-suited vintage wooden frame. Both painting and frame are in great vintage condition. Size: 68,5 cm x 38,5 cm (with frame) About the artist: Helge Cardell (1902-1972) first worked in the leather industry. He began painting in 1920 and studied at the Skåne School of Painting in Malmö, and took several study trips to the Netherlands, England, Germany and France. Since 1931 he participated in the Skåne Art Society's exhibitions and with the Gothenburg Art Society and the Swedish Public Art Society. He exhibited in Malmö and at Galleri Gummeson in Stockholm.
