This map of Farrington Ward (now Farringdon) was published by John Strype in 1754 as part of an update of the earlier A Survey of London which offered a detailed account of the war ds of London. It shows the environs of Lincoln's Inn Fields a year prior to the birth of Sir John Soane and almost four decades before the purchase of the first house that was to form the basis of his eventual Museum. Folding maps evolved in the mid-18th century when the extending system of properly maintained turnpike roads made long-distance travel easier. A cloth backing ensured that maps would not crease and tear when repeatedly unfolded in use. This reproduction is taken from the original antique engraving and has been handmade in Buckinghamshire in the family-run workshop of craftsman and map expert Phillip Burrough. Printed with pigment ink on archival paper and hand-laid onto cloth using glue made to a traditional recipe, each map is beautifully presented in a marbled slip case.
