The French word "fauve" literary means "wild beast" a term which has come to mean, 'paintings of strong colour'. In particular, a phase which dominated the years from around 1904 t o 1908; adhered mostly to the French artist, Henri Matisse. The inflected non-naturalistic colours were not welcomed by many critics of the day.
