The artist was inspired to create a series of twelve paintings, each dedicated to a specific month of the year, utilising subjects and colours that evoke personal associations with each month. This particular painting is the second in the series. As it was still cold outside, the artist chose to depict a scene from within the home, in one of the warmest places—the kitchen. Food nourishes us on a physical level, but it also warms our hearts and brings people together. At the time of creating this work, the artist was reading a book about Van Gogh, which inspired the use of vibrant colours and dynamic brushstrokes, creating a playful and liberating atmosphere within the composition. The painting features a rustic scene centred around a wooden board, adorned with freshly baked homemade bread, a scattering of walnuts, and a wedge of creamy cheese. The bread, carefully crafted, carries the marks of a labour of love, offering the promise of warmth on a cold February day. The walnuts, with their textured shells and earthy tones, symbolise the transition from winter to the hope of spring. A wedge of creamy blue cheese completes the scene, offering a delightful contrast in colour and texture. Its marbled interior represents the richness of life's small pleasures.
