A feelings thermometer or emotion scale is a tool that lists common emotions, ranging from feelings like fear, anger, and sadness to feelings like happy, confident, and peaceful. These emotions are usually arranged from least to most intense to show how emotions can change at any moment. The Feelings Thermometer (PDF) handout serves as a visual guide that helps clients identify their current feelings and how they may have acted based on those feelings. More importantly, it introduces a set of positive actions in the third column, such as deep breathing, physical activity, and using positive self-talk. Kids and teens going through hard times can better manage their emotions as they use this tool. Placing it in a visible spot allows them to easily refer to it and take steps to check and improve their emotional state, even on their own. Parents and teachers can offer additional support by teaching them about feelings, why they happen, and how they can be managed.
