Scientific Name: Asplenium x australicum 'Austral Gem'Common Name: Austral Gem Fern The tradition of ferns as houseplants gained popularity in the mid- to late-1840's when wealthy homeowners would decorate their homes with them. Since then, ferns have become far more accessible and are very popular additions to indoor plant collections around the world. Ferns can give your indoor (and outdoor) space a touch of tropical or evergreen forest vibes. An added bonus is that nearly all ferns are fairly low maintenance and thrive in a variety of conditions. The Austral Gem Fern has lovely glossy green foliage with the traditional lacy fern look. However, the Austral Gem has a waxy coating that helps it retain moisture and it can tolerate drying out more than most ferns (although we don't recommend letting that happen). Basic Care Notes: Low to medium indirect light, keep evenly moist but not saturated. Ferns prefer humidity, but don't want to be soaking wet, either.
