Its early-season leaf colour provides drama before blooming even begins, while the soft, bee-friendly flowers add movement and texture in summer. Companion Plants: Pair Filipendula 'Red Umbrellas' with Ligularia ‘Little Rocket’, whose tall yellow flower spikes and bold foliage complement the Filipendula’s leaves and echo its preference for moist soil. Add Pulmonaria 'Trevi Fountain', whose silver-splashed foliage and blue spring blooms provide light and contrast at the base. Finish with Carex 'Ice Dance', whose arching, variegated blades enhance the drama of Red Umbrellas while brightening up part-shade areas with graceful texture. Care Instructions: Plant in partial shade or full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. Water regularly to prevent wilting in heat, especially in sunnier locations. Cut back spent blooms to encourage fresh foliage and maintain a tidy appearance. Divide every 3–4 years in early spring to rejuvenate growth and preserve leaf variegation. History: Filipendula 'Red Umbrellas' is a cultivated selection of Filipendula palmata, a species native to moist meadows and woodland edges across eastern Asia. Bred for its dramatic foliage and reliable performance in temperate gardens, it blends the structural presence of large-leaved perennials with the whimsical charm of meadowsweet blooms—offering both heritage and horticultural artistry in one plant.
