Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces is the fourth studio album from South African hard rock band Seether — vocalist/guitarist Shaun Morgan, bassist Dale Stewart, and drummer John Humphrey, alongside guitarist Troy Mahorn — released worldwide on October 23, 2007 via Wind-up Records. The album arrived during one of the most difficult periods of Morgan's life, written in the aftermath of his high-profile breakup with Evanescence singer Amy Lee and the loss of his brother, circumstances that saturate the record with a pervasive emotional darkness. As Stewart explained of the title, it came from Morgan wanting to capture "the one positive thing that came out of the string of bad things" — the music itself as the beauty found within the negative space of that period. The album debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 with nearly 57,000 copies sold in its first week, went on to be certified platinum in the US by 2020, and remains the only Seether album to receive gold certification in their home country of South Africa.The twelve-track record yielded three top-ten singles — "Fake It," "Rise Above This," and "Breakdown" — with "Rise Above This" and "Breakdown" both reaching No. 1 on the Billboard rock charts. The album opens with the aggressive "Like Suicide" and moves through a range of moods — the bass-driven bitterness of "Fake It," the desperate emotional plea of "Rise Above This," the brooding "Walk Away from the Sun," and the darkly catchy "FMLYHM" — with hopelessness and pain running as consistent threads throughout. Critical reception was mixed to negative at the time (Metacritic score of 39), with Rolling Stone giving it just 1.5 stars, but the album found a devoted audience that has only grown with time, and it is now widely regarded by fans as among Seether's strongest and most emotionally honest work.
