About the Artists Željka BlakšićŽeljka Gita Blakšić AKA Gita Blak is a visual artist, filmmaker, and educator invested in the moving image, performativity of archival practices and countercultural histories. She uses analogue lens-based media (photography, 16mm film), prints and artists books to honor the tensions between personal and collective histories on the edge of erasure. She often collaborates with musicians, activists, urbanists, and students, through workshops and performances, creating sites to practice collectivity within the framework of contemporary art. Ross Bleckner Ross Bleckner (American, b.1949) is a New York-based painter who decided to become an artist after seeing an exhibition called The Responsive Eye at the MoMA in 1965. He went on to study with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close during his time at New York University, where he received his BA in 1971. He then went on to earn an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1973. Frederic Tuten Frederic Tuten grew up in the Bronx and later lived in South America and Paris, where he taught film and literature at the University of Paris 8. He has written about art, literature and film in Art Forum, The New York Times, Vogue; was an actor in an Alain Resnais movie; taught with Paul Bowles in Morocco; and co-wrote the cult-classic Possession. He has earned three Pushcart Prizes for fiction, an O’Henry Prize for a short story, a PhD in literature, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Award for Distinguished Writing from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the author of five novels: Tintin in the New World; Tallien: A Brief Romance; Van Gogh’s Bad Café; The Green Hour;and a book of inter-related short stories: Self Portraits: Fictions. His memoir My Young Life will be published by Simon & Schuster in March 2019. Victoria Burge Victoria Burge (b. 1976, New York) creates small-scale sculpture and works on paper. Trained as a printmaker, her two-dimensional pieces regularly incorporate the printed mark. Victoria Burge’s works are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the British Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and has been awarded fellowships by MacDowell and the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Anderson Ranch Editions / The Haas Brothers Niki Haas of the Haas Brothers explores aesthetic and formal themes related to nature, science fiction, sexuality, psychedelia, and color theory in prolific materials. Since its founding in 2010, the Haas Brothers have evolved from fabricators and collaborators to nimble cross-pollinators in creative disciplines including fashion, film, music, art, and design. They apply their unique approach to a multitude of materials, ranging from brass, bronze, beads, porcelain, and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane. Often functional in form, their work continues to challenge the slippery divide between art and design. Simon Haas is known for his work with the surrealist design duo the Haas Brothers, and takes a painterly approach to sculpture in his exploration of material applications for the twins’ work. He studied painting at RISD and continues to paint and draw as part of his solo practice. Louise Eastman Louise Eastman is an artist living and working in Brooklyn and Sag Harbor, NY. She focuses on weaving and ceramics. Eastman received her MFA from Pratt Institute, NY, and has recently shown at Silas Marder Gallery, Planthouse Gallery, and Russell Janis Gallery. She’s a member of the Victory Garden Collective, founded in 2016. Previously, she received a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. Nick Lamia Nick Lamia (b. 1971) Born in Santa Monica, CA. Lamia currently lives in New York City. He is an award-winning artist whose work includes drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, and sculpture. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and residencies at Wave Hill, The MacDowell Colony, the Robert Blackburn Print Workshop, and the Triangle Artists Association. In addition, 500 of his small-scale drawings were included in the inaugural Bronx Museum Biennial in 2011. Recent solo exhibitions include Cloud, Mountain, Valley, Sea at Jason McCoy Gallery in New York and Greenhouse, for which he created a group of site-specific wall works for the Richard Meier building at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. Rachel Ostrow Rachel Ostrow is a Brooklyn-based painter and printmaker. She earned an M.F.A. in painting from Hunter College, a post-baccalaureate degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and a B.A. in Fine Arts from Wesleyan University. Ostrow’s paintings use movement and light to explore space and form and skirt the line between abstraction and representation. She has been awarded residencies at the Gowanus Studio Space (Brooklyn, NY), The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (Joshua Tree, CA), The Millay Colony (Austerlitz, NY), The Kimmel Harding Nelsen Center (Nebraska City, NE), the Cill Rialag Project (Ballingskelligs, Ireland) and The Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT). Lanie Mcnulty Lanie McNulty is a New York-based artist and social activist. Her photography projects include Lifted Up in New York City, From the Ashes of Rwanda, and The Angel in the House. Working in other media, she has created a series of tapestries called Say a Little Prayer for U.S. In her most recent work, McNulty has developed a collaborative process for creating staged, narrative images. She calls this process: "photo improv." John Mitchell John Mitchell (b. 1971) was born in Illinois and now lives and works in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Mitchell received a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and an MFA from Yale University in 1999. His first one-person exhibitions in NYC were at Alexandre De Folin Gallery in 1999 and RIVA Gallery in 2003. Since then, Mitchell has been actively exhibiting in and out of New York City. In 2015, Mitchell was awarded an Art Symposium Residency at Austevoll Kunstforening, Austevoll, Norway; in 2016 attended the Emerson Landing Residency in Wye Mills, Maryland. Richard Dupont Richard Dupont (b. 1968) was born in New York and received a BA from the Departments of Visual Art and Archeology at Princeton University. Dupont’s works have been exhibited at numerous museums including The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, San Diego, CA (2016); The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH (2015); The Underground Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2014); The Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY (2014); The Queens Museum, Queens, NY (2013); The Middlebury College Museum of Art, Middlebury, VT (2011); and The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY (2008). The Victory Garden Collective Victory Garden Collective (Louise Eastman, Jess Frost, Tara Geer, Katie Michel, Wendy Small, and Janis Stemmermann), formed in 2016 in response to the presidential primaries. Their projects take cues from suffragette movements, with a mission to galvanize women to keep pushing for change.
