Also known as the mountain flax or wharariki, this variety is an endemic species of New Zealand flax. An evergreen perennial plant characterised by its long, sword-like leaves that can range in colour from green to bronze and even reddish hues. Traditionally significant as a material for weaving and fibre. A desirable plant as a food source for native birds and bees, the nectar-rich flowers bloom from November to January followed by the striking red-brown, energy-dense seeds from January to March.
