What is Folic acid? Folic acid is a B vitamin and is, therefore, water-soluble. This means that it cannot be stored in the body, and should be obtained through the diet regularly. In addition, although it is naturally found in specific foods (found in the form of folate), it is often lost when cooking with liquid.Good sources of Folic acid include green leafy vegetables, such as kale, broccoli, spinach and Brussel sprouts, alongside beans and legumes, yeast and beef extracts, oranges, wholegrain foods, poultry, and pork. Benefits of Folic acid Supplementation with Folic acid intake is a key consideration for pregnant women and women of child-bearing age, as it increases maternal folate status and low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. The beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental folic acid daily intake of 400 μg for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
