Statement: This piece is part of a 3 part series, How Much Can I Bend For You?, which depicts my body crammed in obscure positions within the walls of the canvas in a blue sunny sky. At the time of painting this I was dealing with a situation where I was contemplating how much I was willing to compromise, excuse and even enable the way I was being mistreated by somebody I loved, and at what point I was just letting myself down by keeping them in my life. Eventually, I made the difficult decision to part ways with this person. While I mourned the loss of a deeply meaningful connection, this series focuses on the brighter side of that experience. The confined body represents the emotional restriction I had felt, while the expansive blue sky speaks to what could exist beyond it. Ultimately, the series explores the liberation that came from letting go and choosing myself, and the freedom found in releasing circumstances that began to hold me back.
