Format: Pre-Owned DVD On the eve of World War II, the editor of the New York Morning Globe, Mr. Powers, sends crime reporter John Jones (Joel McCrea), writing under the pseudonym “ Huntley Haverstock,” to Europe to bring fresh, in‑depth coverage to his newspaper. His first assignment is to interview Dutch diplomat Van Meer (Albert Bassermann) about a secret peace treaty between two European powers. During a luncheon in London, Jones meets Stephen Fisher (Herbert Marshall), head of the Universal Peace Party, and his beautiful daughter Carol (Laraine Day). Jones becomes smitten with Carol, whose role in the meeting is unclear. In Amsterdam, Van Meer is seemingly assassinated, prompting Jones to follow the killer with Carol and fellow journalist (George Sanders) into the countryside.
