Thoughts Modern farmland is intensely misleading when it comes to population density. You were generally never further than 2,000 feet from the nearest cottage. (& where this map is concerned, while stone walls are situational (it was historically controversial when people started enclosing pastures in England, for example), any fertile land would likely be plastered with zig-zagging roads & minor hamlets so small that only the local officials may know their names.)
