Breakfast Stout is brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, specialty chocolates, and two distinct coffee varietals — Sumatra and Kona — a combination that produces its unmistakable breakfast-inspired character. The flaked oats contribute a silky, full body, while the dual-coffee blend layers roasted bitterness against deep chocolate sweetness, setting it apart from single-origin coffee stouts in the category.Tasting NotesAroma: Intensely roasted coffee leads immediately, followed by waves of dark chocolate and cocoa. Subtle undertones of oatmeal and roasted malt round out a complex, breakfast-evoking nose.Taste: The entry is rich with espresso and bittersweet chocolate, coating the palate with a creamy, oat-driven texture. Mid-palate, caramelized sugar and malty sweetness emerge, balanced by firm roasted bitterness. A touch of cinnamon-like spice weaves through the coffee and cocoa layers as the flavors build.Finish: Long and roasty, with lingering espresso bitterness and a faint sweetness from the specialty chocolates. The oat-derived creaminess softens the close, leaving a smooth, dry-cocoa aftertaste. How to Drink Breakfast StoutBreakfast Stout is best served at 45–50°F in a snifter or tulip glass to concentrate its dense aromatics. Pouring it slightly warmer than a typical lager allows the chocolate and coffee complexity to open fully. For cocktail-curious drinkers, try it in a Stout Float paired with vanilla bean ice cream for a decadent dessert drink, a Black Velvet variation blended with sparkling wine for a rich textural contrast, or a Coffee Stout Espresso Martini where the beer replaces the cold brew component and adds oat-smoothed body.Best For After-dinner sipping alongside a chocolate dessert course Gifting a craft beer enthusiast who gravitates toward dark, roasty styles Cold-weather gatherings where bold, warming beers set the tone Introducing someone to imperial stouts through an approachable, coffee-forward example Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Breakfast Stout taste like? Breakfast Stout delivers a rich blend of roasted espresso and bittersweet chocolate with a creamy, oat-softened body. Caramelized sugar sweetness and subtle cinnamon-like warmth balance the deep roasted bitterness throughout. How does Breakfast Stout compare to KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)? Both are Founders imperial stouts brewed with coffee and chocolate, but KBS is aged in bourbon barrels, which adds vanilla, oak, and bourbon warmth absent from Breakfast Stout. Breakfast Stout foregrounds pure coffee and chocolate character without barrel influence and is more widely available year-round.Is Breakfast Stout good for sipping neat? Absolutely — its 8.3% ABV and layered coffee-chocolate complexity make it a standout sipper, particularly when served slightly below room temperature in a tulip glass to highlight the aromatics.Where is Breakfast Stout made? Breakfast Stout is brewed by Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a city widely regarded as one of America's top craft beer destinations. What foods pair well with Breakfast Stout? Chocolate lava cake mirrors the beer's cocoa intensity. Smoked brisket stands up to its roasted weight. A sharp aged cheddar contrasts the sweetness. Bacon and maple dishes lean into the breakfast theme. Tiramisu echoes the espresso and cream notes. What sizes does Breakfast Stout come in? Breakfast Stout is commonly available in 4-packs of 12 oz bottles and may also be found on draft at select locations. Is Breakfast Stout worth the price? Breakfast Stout positions as a premium craft offering within the imperial stout category, and its use of two specialty coffee varietals alongside chocolate and oats delivers complexity that justifies its price point among year-round imperial stouts. Why Breakfast Stout? The dual-coffee approach — combining both Sumatra and Kona beans — gives Breakfast Stout a layered roast character that single-origin coffee stouts rarely achieve. Its 2018 GABF Silver Medal and 2006 World Beer Cup Bronze Medal confirm its standing among competition-vetted imperial stouts. The flaked oat bill delivers a body and mouthfeel that make 8.3% ABV drink smoother than the number suggests, while 60 IBUs provide enough bitter structure to keep the chocolate and coffee from tipping into sweetness. Among widely distributed American imperial stouts, few have maintained this level of recognition and consistency over as many years.
