Telophorus viridis viridis / Malaconotidae Graphite on Paper Paper Size: 9" x 12" Mat Size: 14" x 18" Jane's Notes: There are differing names for this bird, alternatively referred to as “Four-colored” or “Gorgeous.” I prefer the latter. Choosing description over declarative certainly communicates with precision, but it forsakes the poetry that makes this bird special. Before I became familiar with the bushshrike, I recall getting excited just by its name: “Gorgeous?!?! How fun!” And fun, it was. Initially I drew all the ground dwelling birds planted on the ground, but eventually tweaked many of their postures for compositional diversity. Unlike its name, I kept this bushshrike’s posture firmly planted. I wanted the imagery to feel like the bird is peering up from the bush, catching the eye of a lucky observer.
