It was a time of recovery and introspection after the horrors of the First World War, which saw important shifts in politics. Surrealism grew throughout the 1920s and 1930s, with a focus on the human unconscious - an essential idea of Freudian theory. Le Clerc Fowle was born at Haslar in Hampshire.
