This fine art print of Sir Wally’s original watercolour painting depicts Fridtjof Nansen's ship Fram trapped in the ice during his attempt to reach the North Pole, 1893–1896. Pione ering polar explorer and artist Sir Wally Herbert spent five years in Antarctica, exploring and mapping tens of thousands of square miles of unknown territory. He then turned to the Arctic led the first and only expedition to cross the Arctic Ocean across its longest axis, via the North Pole. He was an award-winning author, and was awarded several medals for his accomplishments. He was knighted for services to polar exploration. Nansen was one of Sir Wally's heroes. Like Nansen, he believed that true exploration is about working with nature, not against her. He also believed in the importance of science, and that every journey should have value. Becoming an artist in later life, Sir Wally devoted his final years to recording in watercolours and oils the beauty and majesty of the Polar Regions and re-imagined historic expeditions or memories of time spent with the Inuit of Northwest Greenland. The deep respect and understanding he had for the polar wilds is imbued in every brushstroke. Show more
