About this artworkBritish artist John Constable is to thank for this idyllic summertime painting, showcasing a path meandering into a cornfield, famously known as Fen lane. This peaceful spot can be found in Suffolk, near the school Constable used to attend. Despite gracing the Royal Academy with this masterpiece in 1826, he had no luck in selling it.In the end, it was a group of his friends and admirers who got together and bought "The Cornfield". They generously gifted it to the National Gallery in 1837, in honor of Constable, who had sadly died.
