Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley red wine blending fruit from premier AVAs, bottled at 750ml with an ABV of approximately 13.5–14.5% depending on vintage. The 2021 vintage earned 91 points from Wine Spectator, underscoring the consistency and quality Franciscan Estate brings to this multi-vineyard Cabernet. Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5–14.5% | Origin: Napa Valley, California | Cabernet Sauvignon Blend | Winery: Franciscan Estate Production & Heritage Franciscan Estate sits in the heart of Napa Valley and draws Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Oakville, Rutherford, and the Oak Knoll District—three distinct AVAs that contribute different structural and aromatic elements to the final blend. Each vineyard block is vinified separately in a small-lot approach, with individual batches averaging just 150 to 1,500 cases, before spending 20 months aging in French oak barrels. The finished wine is a Bordeaux-style blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon (83% in the 2013 vintage) with supporting roles from Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Syrah, assembled from hundreds of barrels to achieve balance and complexity. Tasting Notes Aroma: Deep garnet in the glass, the nose opens with blackberry confiture and ripe dark cherry before unfolding into dried herbs, eucalyptus, and vanilla. A subtle undercurrent of black pepper and dried flowers adds aromatic depth. Taste: The entry is rich and concentrated, delivering dark plum and black currant that build toward a mid-palate of boysenberry, baking spices, and mocha. Fine-grained tannins provide generous structure without heaviness, carrying blueberry and sage flavors through a seamless, layered progression. Finish: Long and polished, the finish resolves into sweet berries, dark chocolate, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Clove and silky tannins linger, leaving a warm, satisfying close. How to Drink Franciscan Cab This Napa Cabernet shows its best character at cellar temperature, around 60–65°F, poured into a large-bowled glass to let the aromatics open fully. A few minutes of air after opening rewards the drinker with more expressive fruit and spice. For cocktails and wine-based drinks: a Cabernet Reduction Sangria benefits from the wine's dark fruit intensity and spice; a classic Kalimotxo (red wine and cola) pairs well with the wine's bold structure and chocolate undertones; and a New York Sour gains complexity from Franciscan's layered berry and oak character. Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon delivers concentrated dark plum, blackberry, and black currant flavors layered with baking spices, mocha, and sage. Silky tannins and a long chocolate-dusted finish define the overall profile. How does Franciscan Cab compare to Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon? Both are Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons sourced from multiple vineyard sites, but Franciscan emphasizes a small-lot, block-by-block vinification approach with 20 months in French oak. Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet is another well-established benchmark in the region; tasters may find Franciscan leans toward richer dark fruit and spice, though vintage variation affects both wines. Is Franciscan Cab good for sipping neat? Absolutely—its layered aromatics, balanced tannin structure, and lengthy finish make it a rewarding wine to drink on its own, especially with a few minutes of aeration after opening. Where is Franciscan Cab made? Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon is produced by Franciscan Estate in Napa Valley, California, using grapes from the Oakville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll District AVAs. What foods pair well with Franciscan Cab? Grilled ribeye steak complements the wine's firm tannins and dark fruit; braised short ribs echo the mocha and spice notes; aged cheddar or Gruyère highlights the oak-driven vanilla; roasted portobello mushrooms mirror the earthy, herbal undertones; and dark chocolate desserts extend the cocoa-laden finish. What sizes does Franciscan Cab come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely available format. Is Franciscan Cab worth the price? Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon positions as a mid-tier Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers multi-AVA complexity, French oak aging, and small-lot attention at a price point well below single-vineyard Napa bottlings, representing strong value within the category. Why Franciscan Cab? The 91-point Wine Spectator score on the 2021 vintage confirms what the winemaking approach promises: blending fruit from Oakville, Rutherford, and Oak Knoll creates a wine with more dimension than any single-source bottling at this tier. The 20-month French oak regimen and block-by-block vinification in batches as small as 150 cases give the winemaking team precise control over the final blend. Franciscan Estate has long been a Napa Valley innovator—they were the first winery in the valley to produce a 100-percent wild yeast-fermented Chardonnay—and that experimental spirit carries into their Cabernet program. For drinkers seeking a structured, full-bodied Napa Cab with genuine multi-vineyard complexity, this bottling consistently earns its place on the table.
