The Franco-Flemish School refers to a group of Renaissance composers who were active in the Burgundian territories of the Low Countries during the 15th and 16th centuries. Characterized by intricate polyphony and a mastery of contrapuntal techniques, this music genre represents the blending of liturgical functions with rich secular influences, leading to the development of the motet and the mass as central forms. The Franco-Flemish composers were renowned for their innovation, introducing and refining the use of imitation and pervasive canon. They placed equal emphasis on text intelligibility and melodic beauty, crafting complex yet accessible works that profoundly influenced the musical landscape of Europe. The highly respected figures associated with this school, such as Josquin des Prez and Guillaume Dufay, set a standard of compositional excellence that echoes through the centuries.
