Why This Watch Matters Angelus and Freccero might not ring too many bells but they should. The Full Story Angelus is known for being the first manufacturer to offer a split-number date in a wristwatch; most of the brand's watches feature a date complication of some kind. Moreso than dates, the company really demonstrated a prowess for complications in the 1940s and 1950s, before many other brands started to offer things like triple dates and moon-phase equipped chronographs. Two other brands who shared that early love for complications were Universal Genève and Patek Philippe. Watches from both of those makers as well as Angelus found their way into the jewelry cases of Freccero – a leading retailer in Montevideo, Uruguay. The dual-signed example we have here is without any complication but is a beautiful representation of high-end watchmaking for this era nonetheless. Checking in at just 8.8mm thick and an oversized for the period 35.5mm diameter, the case of this watch really jumped off the page for us. It is crisp with very sharp facets on the subtly twisted lugs and sits so well on a wrist wearing at a size and comfortability that only a vintage watch is able to provide. In addition to the nicely sized and styled case, the dial on this watch has developed a beautiful patina throughout, giving it a unique look. The case is in strong condition with some wear and light scratches. The case number on the outside caseback is crisp and legible. The rear of the lugs have some scratches from strap changes. The dial is in overall very good condition and has developed a patina/ fine spotting throughout. The dial has a few scratches near the center and toward eight o'clock. The hour markers have developed a warm patina as have the hands. The handset has developed a light patina and some light wear.
