FREEDOM CLOTHES: THE AMAZING TALE OF THORNTON AND LUCIE BLACKBURN is the historical-faction of a married couple who escaped the brutality of slavery in Louisville, Kentucky in 1831, took a steamboat to Cincinnati, Ohio, and a stage-coach to Detroit, Michigan where they lived for a time a life of freedom. They were captured, imprisoned, and doomed to be taken back to Kentucky to live as slaves again. The people of Detroit freed Lucie and Thornton in an incredible manner and helped them finally achieve freedom in Canada. As the tale passes through space it “wrinkles” time to glimpse slavery’s legacy and our potential triumphant transformation from the residual effects of that legacy. In collaboration with her brother, sculptor Houston Conwill, and architect Joseph DePace, Majozo’s commissioned public art monuments include Revelation: Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Memorial at Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco; Rivers: Langston Hughes Memorial at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; and The New Ringshout: Memorial Tribute to African Burial Ground in New York City.
