French gathered curtains have a heading tape with cords and woven pockets that allow for adjustment in height and width when hung. The heading tape is stitched to create a fold of fabric that can the be flipped over at the top of the curtain. The lower edge of this looks particularly effective trimmed with bobbles or contrast lined. A softer and more country gathered look is achieved if the cords are pulled less. The ends of the heading tape are left open to enable the pulling cords to be hidden away. These cords should never be cut, as it is necessary to untie them and then flatten out gathers for cleaning.
