Freyja is the most powerful of the Aesir goddesses and Freyr’s sister — a contradictory figure with power over life, death, and magic. She rules over fertility, love, and desire, b ut is also a goddess of war and death. The most powerful völva of the gods, it was Freyja who first taught Odin the mysteries of the seidr trance. She owns a chariot drawn by two cats, a feathered cloak that lets her take the form of a falcon, the enchanted necklace Brisingamen, and a boar called Hildisvin. Half of all warriors who fall in battle belong to Odin; the other half go home with Freyja to her realm of Folkvang and the great hall of Sessrumnir. The illustration is from the book Norse Gods.
